What the new Gmail does and how to undo it

What the new Gmail does and how to undo itWhat the new Gmail does and how to undo itIf you use Gmail, you may have noticed that your inbox suddenly looks different. Thats because Google has rolled out new features for the redesign of its popular mail client that are now available to users. Here are some of the more interesting features you can use to go into confidential mode or snooze emails you are not ready to absprache withNew sidebars, snooze features, and self-destruct optionsThe redesign is aimed at making Gmail more seamless with the rest of Google. Now, you have to leave Gmail less to use other Google apps. Apps likeGoogles calendar and the Keep note-taking app will appear in a right-hand sidebar so that you can reschedule that meeting or jot down a note without needing to open another tab.If your mind cannot handle the clutter of hundreds of emails hitting your inbox all at once, you now have the option to Snooze and deal with the emails on your own time. If you get an emai l that you do not want to deal with immediately, you can select the snooze option, so that it will temporarily disappear from your inbox and reappear when you tell it to show up.Dont want that sensitive email lingering in someones inbox? Google said itsnew confidential mode can help with that. It allows you to set an expiration date for messages you send to other Gmail users and revoke access if you do not want them to landsee it anymore. But before you feel too secure, recognize that privacy advocates have come out against the language of the new feature. The Electronic Frontier Foundation said that confidential mode is not confidential, because Google can still see it and you can still see it in your Sent folder. Because Confidential Mode emails arenotend-to-end encrypted,Google can see the contents of your messagesand has the technical capability to store them indefinitely, regardless ofany expiration date you set, thedigital-rights nonprofit wrote. If youre among the people not fe eling the update, you can opt out by clicking Settings in the top right cornerand clicking Go back to classic Gmail. But this is a temporary fix. Whether or not you like the new features, we will all have them eventually.Approximately 12 weeks after the GA general availability announcement in July, any users whove opted out of the new Gmail will be automatically migrated to the new experience, with no option to opt out, Google said in a blog post.close dialogAdvertisement close dialog/* effects for .bx-campaign-1012255 *//* custom css .bx-campaign-1012255 */.bx-custom.bx-campaign-1012255.bx-type-agilityzone .bx-close z-index 2-ms-keyframes bx-anim-1012255-spin from -ms-transform rotate(0deg) to -ms-transform rotate(360deg) -moz-keyframes bx-anim-1012255-spin from -moz-transform rotate(0deg) to -moz-transform rotate(360deg) -webkit-keyframes bx-anim-1012255-spin fro m -webkit-transform rotate(0deg) to -webkit-transform rotate(360deg) keyframes bx-anim-1012255-spin from transform rotate(0deg) to transform rotate(360deg) bx-close-inside-1012255 top 0 right 0 /* KD - Remove padding from video wrapper and set height to 100% */.bx-custom.bx-campaign-1012255 .bx-row-video .bx-video-wrapper padding-top 0important height 100%.bx-custombx-campaign-1012255 bx-creative-1012255 .bx-wrap height auto/* KD - Change positioning to static as that was not necesaary and here you can adjust the height of the video element */.bx-custom.bx-campaign-1012255 .bx-row-video .bx-video-wrapper video position static/* rendered styles .bx-campaign-1012255 */.bxc.bx-campaign-1012255.bx-active-step-1 .bx-creative *first-child width 100%.bxc.bx-campaign-1012255.bx-active-step-1 .bx-creative background-color erkennbarborder-style nonemax-width 900px.bxc.bx-campaign-1 012255.bx-active-step-1 .bx-close stroke whitebackground-color blackborder-style solidborder-color whiteborder-width 1px.bxc.bx-campaign-1012255 .bx-group-1012255-AFvXBOB padding 10pxdisplay blockwidth auto.bxc.bx-campaign-1012255 .bx-element-1012255-J0EiS8Y width auto.bxc.bx-campaign-1012255 .bx-element-1012255-J0EiS8Y *first-child padding 2px 4pxfont-size 10pxcolor rgb(255, 255, 255)text-transform uppercasebackground-color rgb(0, 0, 0)background-color rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.34)

Think Twice About Extending a Salary Counteroffer

Think Twice About Extending a Salary CounterofferThink Twice About Extending a Salary CounterofferIn todays job market, skilled finance and accounting professionals are hard to come by. So its very likely youll find some of your employees being wooed by the competition. If they are particularly valued staff members, you might consider making a salary counteroffer to convince them to stay. Sensible reaction, yes?No, but that doesnt mean it isnt happening. In fact, new research from Robert Half shows 58 percent of senior managers - across a variety of professional fields, including finance and accounting, technology, legal, marketing and advertising, and menschenwrdig resources - extend counteroffers to keep employees from leaving for another job.Of the respondents who are financial leaders, only 39 percent said they dont extend counteroffers to keep employees from leaving, which is a drastic change from the 78 percent of CFOs who said, No, in a similar survey in 2015.Although it may seem like a solution to retain employees when the accountant unemployment rate remains low, statistics show the counteroffer rarely ends favorably for managers. Here are five reasons making a counteroffer is counterproductive1. A salary counteroffer isnt a long-term remedyMaking a counteroffer is like taking aspirin for an impacted wisdom tooth It might make the pain go away for a bit, but its not a long-term solution. The survey shows staff members who accept counteroffers typically end up leaving the company in less than two years.Counteroffers are typically a knee-jerk reaction or in desperation to keep a star performer, said Paul McDonald, senior executive director for Robert Half. They are most often a tool to help the employer and not designed to help professionals advance their career. When employees accept a counteroffer, they are likely to quit soon anyway.2. It can have a negative ripple effectIf the word around the water cooler is that you made Jen a counteroffer, Simon m ay start to wonder why his salary isnt increasing. Then, if Simon really wants to drive a hard bargain, he may start his own job search so he can use job offers as leverage for salary negotiation. We specialize in providing businesses with skilled finance and accounting professionals on a full-time basis.WORK WITH US3. A counteroffer can cause a tunke in moraleWhen the news of Jens salary increase gets around - and it will get around - your team may start to point the finger of favoritism. By tendering a counteroffer, you also send the message that threats of leaving are a means of climbing the ladder, rather than outstanding performance and dedication. And what about Jen? She might find her coworkers giving her the cold shoulder, which probably wont make her want to stick around in the long run. The result? The overall mood in the office will suffer.4. It could cause a rift in trustSay you do make Jen a counteroffer. At first you might be happy and relieved shes still a member of the team. After all, she makes your life easier getting through tax season. But once your relief starts to wane, you may start to feel less positive. Now not only do Jens peers not trust her, you dont either. Questioning an employees loyalty is hard to bounce back from, and though you may still emanate professionalism, Jen probably feels the bad vibes.5. Counteroffers dont improve employee performanceYou may think that Jen owes you one, considering you just bumped her salary or gave her a few extra vacation days. On the flip side, she may feel like you cant live without her, and the notion of being indispensable doesnt give her much motivation to boost her performance. In either case, the counteroffer is making waves beyond your original intention. While you should avoid making counteroffers, you dont want to lose your best talent to the competition, either. What alternatives are there to counteroffers?Rob ert Half offers this advice to employersConsult resources such as industry reports and the Robert Half Salary Guide for Accounting and Finance Professionals.Conduct regular salary reviews to ensure your firms compensation is competitive, and continue to offer attractive compensation so employees dont look for greener pastures.Offer employee recognition on a regular basis. Give people reasons to stay.Focus on professional development, mentorships, and defining career paths for up and comers.Make sure you have someone you can promote should an employee resign.Perform exit interviews to get to the bottom of why employees leave - and then work to address those concerns.

How to Defend Your Job to Your Boss - The Muse

How to Defend Your Job to Your Boss - The MuseHow to Defend Your Job to Your Boss Imagine this Youve worked at an established company for several years. You know most of the staff and executive team, and have even been promoted for your hard work and contributions. Then, one day you learn that the organizations about to implement major structural changes that could change how your departments run and jeopardize your job security.Layoffs seem inevitable, right? Well, what if you had the opportunity to defend your job in a brief presentation? Yes, its a rare occurrence that doesnt come around often in these situations, but it does exist. I know because it happened to me. So, trust me that if youre put in this situation, its pretty important for you to know how to handle it. After all, your jobs on the line here. Step 1 Get Into a Positive MindsetOK, so youve thought through all your options and decided that you want to stay. Sure theres a ton of upheaval, but at the end of the day, you love your job and youd hate to lose it. Great, thats a big decision to come to. Nows the even harder part, staying positive when everythings (and everyones) falling apart around you. No matter if your companys restructuring, shifting priorities, or introducing new management, big changes almost always guarantee discussion among employees. And its rarely uplifting and filled with inspirational thoughts. So while its easy to get caught up in the gossip or allow low morale to dictate your behavior at the office, its essential that you rise above it to maintain your reputation- and position. To do this, youre going to need to reflect on your time at the company. What have been your major accomplishments? Favorite projects? Milestones? Take a step back from your experience (and away from your desk and the office) to remind yourself of positive moments. Make a list, look at it, and remember that you do like it there. (And if you have trouble making this list, maybe you shouldnt be fightin g so hard.)Second, eliminate emotion from the equation. Not forever, but definitely for right now. You want to stay as upbeat as possible and work hard not to take anything too personally. Easier said than done, but consider that your mantra during this transition. Because when youre feeling confident and (mostly) free of negativity, thats the ideal time to take next steps.Step 2 Prepare Your Talking PointsSo, your roles on the line. Your company decision-makers arent quite sold on the importance of your position- or that youre the right person to do it. Couldnt an intern do it? Couldnt it be automated? Nows your time to show them that isnt the case, that theyd be making a mistake by letting you go. While your first instinct may be to appeal to emotions (or the fact your rent doesnt pay itself), the people who will be deciding your future arent doing that. Theyre likely looking at numbers and hard facts. So thats what you need to do, too. Draft a document that highlights your accomp lishments and how theyve benefitted the business. Be sure to includeMilestones Pull from your resume and review past projects and victories. Whenever possible, tie them to numbers and growth.Positive feedback or testimonials Ask colleagues for references or cherry-pick glowing commentary from past wertzuwachs reviews.Things you want to accomplish in the future Consider where and how you see yourself contributing to the business moving forward. And, just like any other public speaking situation, you should rehearse. More so than many other public speaking situations, you really need to present with confidence. The idea of making a case could make anyone nervous. But you want to come off as someone whos 100% sure of her value. Step 3 Make Your CaseOK, so now its go-time. Youve scheduled a meeting with the decision-makers and arrive ready to reclaim your job security. Heres how to present in a way that is as polished and professional as you are. Youve got this.Print out one copy of your talking points and inform your meeting attendee(s) that its simply for you to reference your main ideas. Then, offer to send them the document once the meeting has ended so they can review as needed. This helps your listeners pay closer attention and prevents them from skimming ahead while you make your case. Then, reinforce your enthusiasm for the job right away. You want to immediately make your claim to show respect for the executives time while also proving that you know exactly what you want out of the meeting. Try something likeFirst of all, I want to thank you for taking the time to meet with me today. These past few weeks have really allowed me to step back and reflect on my time at the company as job title. Ive even revisited past contributions and milestones during my time here- which I will discuss with you shortly- and has only confirmed how much I love my job and will do what it takes to keep it. Next, showcase your research. Provide an overview of the past contribution s, current projects, and future aspirations you assembled to prove you can reflect, stay productive, and think long-term even during a transitional stage. The key here is to speak factually as it pertains to the business, rather than boast about how great you are. Finally, summarize and restate your main point Youre here for a reason and it would benefit both parties if it stayed that way.Dont forget to send a follow-up thank you note or email after all is said and done. Based on the conversation, you may want to ask for an addendum or revision to your employee contract. Be certain to save any written correspondence- including all of your job highlights. Those can be great to add to a personal site, resume, or LinkedIn page.Phew Now it may sound daunting, but I promise Defending your job makes you a stronger, more confident employee and professional overall. If nothing else, youve had a chance to review your many accomplishments and work on your presentation and public speaking skill s. And who can say no to that?

What if They Want Me to Sign a Non-Compete Agreement

What if They Want Me to Sign a Non-Compete AgreementWhat if They Want Me to Sign a Non-Compete AgreementDont sign that non-compete agreement.A non-compete agreement may look harmless enough, but if youre not careful it can cost you a lot of time and money in the long run.Heres an example A college student had an internship at an ad agency. She signed a routine non-compete and was subsequently hired as a full-time employee. Two years later a former client of the agency offered her a great job. The non-compete from her internship still blocked her move.Sometimes you hear it said that non-compete agreements are not enforceable. Dont believe it. They usually are. Besides, even if youd prevail in court - who wants to go to court? It would result in a Pyrrhic victory at best.Non-compete agreements steal your future negotiating power. They typically provide no extra compensation for signing. Sometimes, they make economic sense and provide needed protection to the employer other times they are capricious. Either way, they dont add value to you. If presented with a non-compete agreement, here are some options you have from best to worst.Best Dont sign. Even if it makes complete sense and seems harmless, theres just no advantage to you, so dont sign it. Delay a little by asking to have it reviewed by a lawyer. If they still come after you for it, talk with your boss and say, The economics of the job market are this I give you good work and value for what you pay me, and you dont fire me on the other hand, you pay me well enough and treat me well enough and I dont quit. A non-compete takes away those incentives. I believe those economic principles are powerful enough to keep both of us on our toes. Id rather not weaken that balance. What do we need to do to let this pass?If that doesnt workBetter Negotiate compensation for it. If youre not allowed to work for or solicit clients for one year after you terminate, then how about getting 12 months severance or some other com pensation upfront or at the time of termination? If that doesnt workGood Try any or all of these eight movesGo over it with a lawyer and limit the scope of the agreement as much as possible. Have it apply to named companies and products. Define precisely the future companies and individuals that are off limits and make sure everything else is fair game.Reduce the time parameters of agreement.Get rid of any would cause irreparable damage stichwort that leaves the consequences of violating it open-ended. Be very specific about the consequences of violating it.Limit effect to voluntary termination - so if they fire you, then the non-compete is not applicable.Have it automatically expire on the first anniversary of your hire.Have violation decided by binding arbitration, not the courts.Have 30-day written notice provisions entered into the agreement with a grace period for remedy so it cant be slapped on you at whim.Delay its initial date of effectiveness. That way you get a chance to m ake sure youre going to stick with this new company lest you work one month, leave and are trapped. If youre absolutely, positively stuck and need a last resortRisky, but still OK You can try the bureaucratic defense. Thats where you create your own red tape. Each step of the process will take a long time. Have your lawyer add clauses the corporate counsel must review every change in language. You can string it out as long as possible, hoping it will simply get lost in the shuffle. And then theres what not to doNot recommended Anything sneaky or devious. You might feel like resorting to deception, but the law of karma tenders few exemptions and youll reap what you sow. If discovered, or even suspected, things might get worse You might not only find the non-compete enforced, but you may be penalized for your miscreant behavior. Instead, negotiate straight up the best you can.
